Has the American Dream been eroded slowly over the past 30 years while the top 2% just keeps getting better?

If you think yes, when did it start, why is it happening, and should we keep settling? There are a lot of ways a country can be exceptional – I am told we can no longer afford to be #1 in anything that costs money or carries commitment/responsibility – how about the American Dream?
