What are the legal responsibilities for a child's healthcare?

I'm divorced and have a child with my ex wife. When our child was born my ex wives insurance didn't cover the child bearing bill by the hospital. The bill is $2,300. In court I was made responsible for the full amount by the judge. In the state of CA is there a family code that that cintradicts the actions of the judge? Please provide suggestions.
